What are the vital signs and their normal ranges?
HR - 60-100 RR - 12-20 SP02 - 96+ (88-94 COPD) BM - 4.0-7.6 BP - 120/80 Temp - 36.1 - 37.8
What are some red flags of the respiratory system?
What to look for when assessing the hands?
Cyanosis - Sign of poor oxygen circulation
Clubbing - Schamroth test - diamond between fingers
Hand tremor
Tobacco staining
Inverted nail beds - signs of anaemia
What to look for when assessing the face?
Anaemia - Check the eye lids
Central cyanosis - Poor blood circulation
Respiratory distress
Where are the lymph nodes and what are they called?
Behind the ear - Posterior auricular In front of the ear - Pre auricular Under the jaw - Submandibular Under the chin - Submental Above the clavicle - Sub clavicular
What to look for when assessing the neck?
Vein distention
Tracheal deviation
JVP
What to look for when inspecting the chest?
RR Chest expansion Scars Bruises Pacemaker
What to look for when palpating the chest?
Masses Chest tenderness Crepitus Surgical emphysema Anterior/Posterior chest expansion
Where do you percuss the chest and what are you looking for?
8 anterior/2 axilla/8 posterior
Looking for hypo/hyper resonance
What is hyper-resonance and what is it indicative of?
Hyper-resonance is the a drum-like sound and could indicate that air has filled the space around the lungs which could be COPD or a pneumothorax.
What is hypo-resonance and what is it indicative of?
A dull or flat sound that indicates that there is fluid around the lungs such as pneumonia or pleural effusion. Some cases be sign of a lung tumour.
Where do you auscultate and what sounds do you look out for?
8 anterior/2 axilla/8 posterior
Stridor - result of a upper respiratory infection
Wheezing - Result of a lower respiratory infection
Coarse and fine crackles
Where do you check for peripheral oedema?
Pedal (legs) and sacrum.
