Q

Why is health promotion and education important?

A

It is the basis of all individual patient care. It aids nurses in promoting, maintaining, and restoring patient health. Along with preventing illness and helping people adapt to the residual effects of illness. Nurses are tools to assist patients and their families in developing effective health behaviors and altering lifestyle patterns that predispose people to health risks. It also helps patients to be able to care for themselves and make informed decisions on self-care so that they do not have to return to the hospital for further care in the future.

How do we know a patient is ready to learn?

A

Patients that have come to terms with their diagnosis and are motivated to move forward. A bad time to teach a patient is when the doctor just informed them that they have cancer. A good time to teach a patient is when they are sitting up in bed watching TV without family members.
-It is important that patient is motivated and know what this learning opportunity will provide to themselves.
