Adrenergic System Flashcards
Noradrenaline (norepinephrine)
- neurotransmitter
- treatment of shock
Guanethidine
-blocks release of vesicles containing noradrenaline
Tricyclic antidepressants/ Cocaine
- indirects adrenergic agonists
- inhibit neuronal uptake (uptake 1)
Phenylephrine
- alpha 1 agonist
- noncatecholamine
- vasoconstriction
- treats: 1)nasal decongestion
Isoproterenol
- nonselective beta agonist
- bronchodilation, increase cardiac output, peripheral vasodilation
Clonidine
- alpha 2 agonist (indirect adrenergic antagonist)
- treats hypertension (vasodilation)
Dobutamine
- beta 1 agonist
- increase cardiac output (especially useful for congestive heart failure)
Salbutamol
- beta 2 agonist
- bronchodilator in asthma
Amphetamine
- indirect adrenergic agonist
- displace NA vesicles causing them to release into the synapse
Tyramine
- indirect adrenergic agonist
- displace NA vesicles causing them to release into the synapse
- found in fermented food like cheese
- metabolized by MAO
- MAO inhibition enhances indirect adrenergic agonists leading to hypertensive crisis
Ephedrine
-mixed action adrenergic agonists
Phentolamine
-non-selective alpha blocker
Prazosin
- alpha 1 blocker
- treats hypertension
Yohimbine
-alpha 2 blocker
What are the therapeutic uses of alpha blockers
- treats hypertensive crisis due to phaeochromocytoma
- relieves urinary retention cause by benign prostatic hyperplasia
- treats Raynauds disease
