Adrenergic Drugs Flashcards
What are the two most commonly used alpha2 receptor agonists
clonidine and methyldopa (not typically prescribed as the first line of defense because of all the adverse effects)
commonly used to treat hypertension in pregnancy
Methyldopa
Two dual action alpha1 and beta-blockers
labetalol and carvedilol
Primarily for its ability to decrease blood pressure. It is also useful in the management of opioid withdrawal. Must not be discontinued abruptly, as this will lead to severe rebound hypertension
clonidine (Catapres)
Not used to control blood pressure but is indicated solely for symptoms of BPH
Tamsulosin
Alpha1 Blockers
doxazosin, prazosin and terazosin
Reduces peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure by dilating both arterial and venous blood vessels. matrix of the capsule is expelled in stool in extended-release tabs
doxazosin
widely used drug and is well tolerated by most patients. Also indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate heart failure, in conjunction with digoxin, diuretics, and ACE inhibitors.
carvedilol
Newest beta-blocker. Treatment of hypertension and heart failure. produces vasodilation, which results in a decrease in SVR. Promoted as causing less sexual dysfunction.
nebivolol
