Specific meds
●Epinephrine/norepinephrine ●Phenylphrine ●Dopamine ●Albuterol ●Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed)
●Remember medications can affect all receptor sites!! Watch for side effects
Therapeutic
●Hemodynamic compromise
●Shock, acute CHF, arrhythmias
●Bronchospasms, asthma
●Nasal and sinus congestion
Contraindications
●Narrow-angle glaucoma
●Pheochromocytoma (Fancy word for. . .)
●Heart disease, CAD, Arrhythmias, CHF peripheral vascular disease with caution!
Drug interactions
●Any medication that would stimulate the CNS
●Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI)
●Theophylline tricyclic antidepressants
●alcohol
●Atropine
●Antihistamines
●Any alpha or beta blockers
Adverse reactions
●Nervousness/tremor/anxiety ●Dysrhythmias ●Hypertension ●Cardiac ischemia ●Elevated glucose levels ●Pupil dilation ●Tissue necrosis ●Headache, insomnia ●GI and bladder involvement
Nursing implications
●Mostly given IV as drip NOT push
●Infiltration can be serious
●Titration necessary
●Monitor BP, heart rate, anginal pain
●Teach patients with CAD to watch OTC medications
