Adrenaline Flashcards
What is adrenaline
Sympathetic agonist (a substance that stimulates or mimics the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, part of the nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and respiration)
Sympathomimetic (same as sympathetic agonist and also responsible for ‘fight or flight’ response.
Vasoconstrictor (
It acts on both alpha and beta receptors and increase both the heart rate and contractibility.
It can cause peripheral vasodilation (beta) or vasoconstriction (alpha)
Common side effects of sympathetic agonists
Dilated pupils
increased heart rate
Increased blood pressure
Dilation of airways (bronchodilation)
Increased blood glucose levels
Relaxation of smooth muscles in the digestive tract
