Adrenal Glands Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the adrenal system
A
2
Q
Describe the Adrenal Glands
A
3
Q
The adrenal cortex consists of 3 layers:
A
- zona glomerulosa (outer)
- zona fasciculata (middle and largest)
- zona reticularis (inner)
4
Q
Which portion of the adrenal cortex produces a number of different adrenocortical hormones?
A
The zona reticularis (the innermost zone)
Produces a number of different adrenocortical hormones (steroid derived)
- Mineralocorticoids (mainly aldosterone, influence mineral (electrolyte) balance
- Glucocorticoids (primarily cortisol, influence nutrient metabolism and stress)
- Sex hormones identical or similar to those produced by the gonads (dehydroepiandrosterone)
5
Q
What is the function of the Adrenal medulla?
A
- Essentially a modified sympathetic ganglion
- Receives preganglionic sympathetic neuronal innervation
- These synapse with modified post-ganglionic neurones that lack axons and function as endocrine cells, called chromaffin cells
6
Q
The Adrenal Medulla Secretes catecholamines
A
7
Q
What are the actions of catecholamines?
A
- via adrenergic (adrenoceptor) system
- Similar to peripheral sympathetic nervous system
- Emergency ‘Fight or flight’ responses
8
Q
Draw the Steroidogenic Pathway
A
