Adrenal cortex and medulla Flashcards
What are the three layers of the adrenal cortex?
Zona glomerulosa, zona fasiculata, zona reticularis.
What is the adrenal cortex derived from?
Mesoderm
What is the medulla composed of and derived from?
Composed of chromaffin cells, derived from neural crest
What does the adrenal glomerulosa receive input from?
renin-angiotensin
What does the adrenal fasciculata receive input from?
ACTH (pituitary) and CRH (hypothalamus)
What does the adrenal reticularis receive input from?
ACTH (pituitary) and CRH (hypothalamus)
What is the most common adrenal medulla tumor in adults?
Pheochromocytoma. (HTN)
What is the most common adrenal medulla tumor in children?
neuroblastoma (HTN rare).
Where does the adrenal medulla receive input from?
Preganglionic sympathetic fibers (Ach!)
What does the zona G release?
aldosterone
What does the zona F release?
cortisol (some sex hormones)
What does the zona R release?
sex hormones
What does the medulla release?
epi, norepi.
