Neural development: the teen brain
there is a surprising amount of change going on in the adolescent’s brain that may impact his or her behaviour and sense of self.
White matter increases –> neurons are becoming more myelinated which presumably leads to enhanced conductivity and connectivity in the brain.
Grey matter decreases–>synaptic pruning.
Time of turmoil? G. Stanley Hall
attributed turmoil to adolescent’s erratic physical changes and resultant confusion about self-image.
depression rates are higher–. leads to more suicide
interpersonal conflict and bullying continues to be an issue in both sexes– as of late more teenage girls have been charged with violent crimes.
