Administrative and Statutory Regulation of Healthcare Providers Flashcards
Regulation via Professional Boards
State medical boards can regulate
(1) Entry into profession
(2) Practice of the profession and monitoring of quality of care. State medical boards regulate via State’s Police Power by making legislation.
Regulation of CAM
Regulation varies by state but some ways of regulating CAM could be: requiring licensure (like chiropractic care), requiring additional certification.training, limiting the authority of state boards to exclude non-allopathic modalities
(Dr. Guess’ practice departed from and did not conform to the standards of prevailing practice according to the State of NC Medical Board – but did that make it unsafe?)
CAM
In contrast to allopathic medicine: science-based, focuses on use of drugs and treating illness, needs a MD degree.
CAM: is complementary alternative medicine such as yoga, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, pilates and focuses on the whole person rather than systems.
Complementary vs. Alternative:
If not mainstream and used together with main - complementary
If in place of mainstream - alternative
System of medical pluralism - but could result in Integrative health aims for well coordinated care among different providers and institutions
