Discuss the importance of the Attack on Pearl Harbor

A

7 Dec 1941 ( “A date which will live in infamy.”)

It inflicted heavy damage to the U.S. Pacific Fleet and killed 2,008 Navy personnel. Luckily, the American Aircraft Carriers were out to sea at the same time. This action drew the United States into WWII on 8 Dec 1941

Discuss the importance of the Battle of the Coral Sea

A

4-8 May 1942

The end result of this battle was that it stopped the advancement of the Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific.

The American Carrier USS Lexington (CV 2) was lost, as was the Japanese Carrier (Shoho). This was the first battle fought entirely by air groups - neither fleet’s ships actually saw each other side’s ships

Discuss the importance of the Battle of Normandy

A

6 June 1944

The largest amphibious land assault in history, nearly 2,500 U.S. Navy ships allowed close to 34,000 personnel to land on the beaches of Normandy, France.

Entitled Operation Overlord

At one beach alone, 21,328 troops, 1,742 vehicles and 1,695 tons of supplies were landed in 12 hours

Discuss the importance of the Battle of Leyte Gulf

A

23-26 Oct 1944

During three connected sea-air battles, known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese Fleet was essentially destroyed.

This also was the first notable battle to where the Japanese carried out organized kamikaze attacks.

What happened on the USS Forrestal (CV 59) Fire?

A

29 July 1967

After an unusual electric anomaly, a Zuni rocket fired from an aircraft on deck causing the biggest aircraft carrier fires since WWII.

The fire killed 134 crew and injured 161 more and 21 aircraft were destroyed.

Long term effect: Emphasis on the shipboard firefighting program.

A

17 May 1987

Two missiles fired from an Iraqi airplane struck Stark during the Iran-Iraq War; the only anti-ship missile attack on an U.S. Navy warship.

37 Sailors were killed and 21 were injured

What happened on the USS Cole (DDG 67) Attack?

A

12 Oct 2000

Suicide bombers attacked the Cole while she was refueling in Aden, Yemen.

A 40x40 foot hole was blown in the side of the ship. The crew successfully fought to keep her afloat through proficiency, determination and courage and lessons learned from the USS Forrestal fire.

17 Crew were killed and 39 were injured
