Adjunctive Hemostasis Flashcards

1
Q

Evicel Fibrin Sealant components and mechanism of action

A

Q

Evicel indication

A

An adjunct to hemostasis for use in patients undergoing surgery, when control of bleeding by standard surgical techniques (such as suture, ligature, or cautery) is ineffective or impractical

Q

Evicel contraindications

A

• Do not inject directly into the circulatory system
• Do not use in individuals known to have anaphylactic or severe systemic
reaction to human blood products
• Do not use for the treatment of severe or brisk arterial bleeding
• Do not use EVICEL for spraying in endoscopic or laparoscopic procedures
in those instances where the minimum recommended distance from the
applicator tip to the target site cannot be ensured

Q

Evicel thawing instructions

A

• 2°C to 8°C (refrigerator): thaws within 1 day
• 20°C to 25°C (room temperature): thaws within 1 hour
• 37°C (warm water bath): thaws within 10 minutes and must not be left
at this temperature for longer than 10 minutes. The temperature must not
exceed 37°C

Q

Surgicel Powder mechanism of action

A

Blood saturates the material, providing a surface for platelet adhesion and aggregation, and initiating clot formation to control continuous oozing on broad surfaces

Q

Surgicel Powder benefits

A
  • Quick solution to broad-surface oozing on friable or raw tissues
  • No resurface bleeding even after irrigation
  • Bactericidal through localized reduction in blood pH
  • Absorbs within 7-14 days

Q

Surgiflo machanism of action

A

Flowable gelatin mixed with thrombin provides a matrix for platelet adherence, accelerating the formation of the platelet plug and aids in clot formation
