I - Adjective: Present Affirmative (Formal)
- Add “desu” after the adjective
- Add “ka” if interrogative (Sentences that ask questions.)
Example:
- Ano Kanojo wa chiisai desu (That factory is small) .
- Ano kanojo wa chiisai desu ka? (Is that factory small?)
I - Adjective: Present Negative (Formal)
- Drop the final “I” and add “kunai desu”
Example: Kono satsu wa chiisakunai desu.
I - Adjective: Present Negative (Informal)
- Omit the final “desu” and connect the word “kunai” to the adjective.
I - Adjective: Past Affirmative (Formal)
- Remove “I” from the adjective and then change it to “katta-desu”
Example: takakatta - desu (was expensive)
I - Adjective: Past Affirmative (Informal)
- Remove the “desu” and retain the “katta”
Example: Takakatta (was expensive)
I - Adjective: Past Negative (Formal)
- Drop the “katta” and change it into “kunakatta desu”
Example: Takakunakatta desu (it was not expensive)
I - Adjective: Past Negative (Informal)
- Retain “kunakatta” but drop “desu”
Example: Takakunakatta (it was expensive)
Na - Adjective: Present Affirmative (Formal)
- Drop the “Na” and change into “desu”
Example: Anzen na (safe) - anzen desu (it is safe)
Na - Adjective: Present Affirmative (Informal)
- Drop the “desu” and change it into “da”
Example: Daji na (important) - dajii da (it is important)
Na - Adjective: Present Negative (Formal)
- Drop the “desu” and change it to “dewa arimasen”
Example: Daji desu (it is important) - daji dewa arimasen (it is not important)
Na - Adjective: Present Negative (Informal)
- Drop the “dewa arimasen” and change it into “dewa nai”
Example: daji dewa arimasen (it is not important) - daji dewa nai (it is not importanta)
Na - Adjective: Past Affirmative (Formal)
- Drop the “desu” and change into “deshita”
Example: Daji desu (important) - daji deshita (it was important)
Na - Adjective: Past Affirmative (Informal)
- Drop the “deshita” and change into “datta”
Example: daji deshita (it was important) - daji datta (it was important)
