Adenosine Flashcards
Class
Anti-arrhythmic
Action
Slows electrical conduction through AV node, and interrupts re-entry pathway, converting SVT to NSR
Onset/duration
Within 30 seconds, lasting one to two minutes
Indications
Arrhythmias: SVT
Dosage adult
6 mg rapid IV/IO followed by 20 mL NS rapid IV/IO SO
12 mg rapid IV/IO followed by 20 mL NS rapid IV/IO SO MR x 1 SO
Pediatric dosage
PDC rapid IV/IO, followed with 20 mL NS rapid IV/IO SO MR x 1 SO
Contraindications
Second or third° AV heart block
Sick sinus syndrome (without pacemaker)
Adverse effects
SOB/Dyspnea
Chest pressure/palpitations
Facial flushing/headache
Dizziness/lightheadedness
Transient arrhythmias: generally not treated and typically self limiting
Cautions and considerations
Adenosine does not convert a fib/a flutter
Obtain a 12 lead EKG prior to Administration💩
A transient modest slowing of ventricular response may occur
Patience with history of bronco spasm or COPD may suffer bronco spasm after administration. Monitor patient respiratory status.
Special info
Obtain ECG documentation before, during, and after administration.
Administration
Use large bore IV in large proximal vein to assist Administration💩 of rapid IV push
Pinch IV tubing, inject port closest to patient and immediate follow with normal saline flesh using a 20 mL syringe
Half-life of a Dennis scene less than 10 seconds requiring rapid Administration
