Additives Flashcards
1
Q
HexCem Fluidlock (LD/HD)
A
- Fluid loss additive
- Improves slurry stability
- Does not increase viscosity
2
Q
Cal Portland G
A
- Class G cement
3
Q
Q-CEL ONG
A
- Hollow microspheres
- Allows for lightweight slurries
- Attributes to higher compressive strengths even at low densities
4
Q
TRB-CD-33
A
- Dispersant
- Improves flow of the slurry
- Decreases HHP requirements
5
Q
Glass Bubbles
A
- Hollow glass spheres used to reduce density and increase strength
- improved heat insulation properties
- functions as a lost circulation aid
- increases slurry vol. yield
6
Q
NaCl (Sodium Chloride)
A
- Used to improve bonding to water-sensitive shales, bentonotic sands, and salt formations
- Low concentrations provide acceleration
- High concentrations provide retardation
- Minimizes damage in zones that are sensitive to fresh water
- Saturation is required for bonding to salt formations
- Decreases the effectiveness of some FL additives
- Decreases the yield of bentonite
7
Q
Silica Flour
A
- Powdered sand used to stabilize the strength and permeability of cement above temps of 230F
- Can cause slurry viscosity to increase without required water
- Helps with compressive strength
- Assists in preventing strength retrogression
- compatible with all cements
8
Q
Fritz Bond EX-H
A
- High temperature expansion additive
9
Q
Bentonite
A
- Extender
- Reduces free water and fluid loss
- Increases Slurry yield
- It increases slurry visc. and decreases early strength
- Is a colloidal clay. In the presence of water, it swells to about 10 times its original dry volume. It is used to increase cement slurry vol. and to decrease slurry weight
- Cement slurries containing more than 8% bentonite need to contain a dispersant to control slurry visc
10
Q
Microlite
A
- Allows for lower density slurries
- Extender
- Used as a stabilizer to create homogenous cements & eliminates settling
- Used in lightweight cement to prevent free water
11
Q
CaCl2 (Calcium Chloride)
A
- Accelerator
- shortens WOC time
- Used in shallow, low temp wells
- Decreases TT
- Increases early strength
- Decreases slurry visc at low concentration
- Increases slurry visc at high concentration
- Concentration to be used: 2-4% - greater than 5% becomes erratic
- Promotes water loss
- better to add to cold mixing water than dry cement
12
Q
Bermcoll M10
A
- Newer & cheaper additive
- Fluid loss additive (promotes water retention)
- improves slurry stability
- possible rheological modification
13
Q
X-Air (antifoam)
A
- Powdered de-foamer
14
Q
Kol-Seal
A
- Lost circulation material
- Slurry extender
- Lightweight granular solid. Provides an economical cementing system with low-density lost circulation control and superior scouring action
- Does not alter TT
- compatible with most cement additives
- Provides a lightweight, high yield slurry
- Does not require additional water
- Provides compressive strength for low dens slurries
15
Q
Gypsum
A
- Accelerator - Short TT - short pump time
- Rapid compressive strength development
- Has expanding properties
- Increases visc, water requirement, & early strength
- Decreases density slightly (and TT)
- Has rapid settling and/or gelation properties which makes it necessary to keep the slurry in motion until it’s placed at the required location
