Criminal courts

A

Hierarchy:

  • Supreme court
  • Court of appeal (crim div) (hear appeals from crown court)
  • Queens Bench (div of high court) (crim cases, contract, tort which are unsuitable for county)
  • Crown court (trial court) (hears serious and either way crim)
  • Magistrates (summary and either way. Appeals go to crown or high court-qb?)

Civil court

A

Hierarchy:
-Supreme court
-Court of appeal (civil div) (appeals from high court-all 3 divisions + county)
-High court: Chancery, family and queens bench + appeals from county court
-County court: majority of civil cases, acts as first instance.
eg compensation, injuries, consumer disputes etc
