What are the guidelines to write Chinese?

A

Note:There are exceptions within and among different standards. The following are only guidelines.

As a general rule, strokes are written from top to bottom and left to right. For example, among the first characters usually learned is the number one, which is written with a single horizontal line: 一. This character has one stroke which is written from left to right.

What is Pīnyīn? What does Pīn and Yīn translate too individually?

A

Pinyin is the Romanization of the Chinese characters based on their pronunciation. In Mandarin Chinese, the phrase “pīnyīn” literally translates into “spell sound.” In other words, spelling out Chinese phrases with letters from the English alphabet.

For example:

Pīnyīn:xué xí zhōng wén

A

What is the difference between a character and a word?

A

If a character has a concrete meaning by itself, it will be considered a word as well. For example, 书 is a character and also a word; but “and also” by itself isn’t really a word be cause its meaning usually depend on context.
