Additional Biology Cells, organs an tissues Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
To control cell activities
What do all cells have?
Cytoplasm, nucleus and cell membrane
What is the function of cytoplasm?
All chemical reactions happen here
What is the function of the cell membrane?
To control what enters and leaves a cell
What is the function of ribosomes?
Make proteins from amino acids
What do amino acids do?
They are building blocks for creating proteins
What is the function of mitochondria?
They produce energy from respiration
What is the fiction of chloroplasts?
They contain chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis to take place (absorb light)
What is the fiction of the cell wall?
It’s a rigid outer layer that provides strength and support for the cell
What is the function of the sap vacuole?
Contains sugars and salts
What is diffusion?
The spreading of particles
What 3 types of cells make up tissues in the stomach?
Glandular tissue, epithelial cells an muscle cells
What do the muscle tissues do in the stomach?
Contract and churn food to digest it
Where can you find glandular tissue on the stomach?
Below epithelial
Where can you find epithelial tissue in the stomach?
On the outside and the inside
What does an epithelial cell do?
Covers surface area to protect it
What does glandular tissue do?
Produces enzymes and hormones
Which organs make up the digestive system?
Salivary glands, liver, stomach, large and small intestines and pancreas
What does the salivary gland do?
Produces saliva which has enzymes to aid digestion
What does the liver do?
Produces bile
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water and produces faeces (poo!)
What does the small intestine do?
Digestion and absorption of soluble food
What does the stomach do?
Mixes the food with the enzymes to begin digestion
What does the pancreas do?
Produces enzymes and some hormones (insulin)
