Additional Flashcards
Metal ions
Metal atoms will loose electrons and become positively charged
Non metal ions
Non metal atoms may gain electrons and become negatively charged
Ionic compounds
High melting points and only conduct electricity when molten
What is a ionic lattice held together by
Electrostatic attraction
Catalysts
Speed up reactions without being used up themselves
Collision theory
To react atoms must collide with enough activation energy
Ionic bonding
Atoms gain or loose electrons when they bond with other atoms becoming an ion
Rate of reaction
rate of reaction = total amount of reactant used or product made ÷ time taken
Changing temp in a reaction
If the temperature is increased: the reactant particles move more quickly they have more energy the particles collide more often, and more of the collisions result in a reaction the rate of reaction increases
Changing the concentration or pressure in a reaction
If the concentration of a dissolved reactant is increased, or the pressure of a reacting gas is increased:
the reactant particles become more crowded
there is a greater chance of the particles colliding
the rate of reaction increases
