adding fractions Flashcards
Whatever you do to the bottom….
You do to the top
You have to have the same denominator
The top doesn’t matter
1/2 + 3/4
Both denominators have to be the same number
Find the LCM (least common denominator)
The LCM of 2 and 4 is 4, 4x1 and 2x2
So then it will change to 1/4 + 3/4
but in the first slide it told us that what ever you do to the bottom you do the top
The denominator of the first fraction was 2
and that turned into 4. So 4 divided by 2 is 2
1/2 + 3/4 turned into 1/4 and 3/4
- -
I put a slash underneath the 2 and the 4 so you could see that the 2 x 2 = 4
So whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top
We multiplied the bottom by 2 so we have to multiply the top by 2
So the 1 would turn into a 2
That would make the fraction 2/4
So then the problem would turn into 2/4 + 3/4
Then you just add!
2+3=5
and the denominator stays the same
So 1/2 + 3/4 would turn into 2/4 + 3/4. 2 + 3 = 5
We keep the denominator.
1/2 + 3/4 =…….
5/4!!!
If you simplify it, it will turn into 1 1/4
Lets try a different problem
5/8 + 2/6
The LCM of 8 and 6 is 24
The 5/8 will turn into 5/24
whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top
24 divided by 8 is 3
So 5 x 3 is 15
they problem then would turn into 15/24 +……
The next fraction was 2/6
