Adding Fractions Flashcards
What needs to stay the same when we add fractions?
A) The numerator
B) The denominator
B) The denominator
How do we work out ⅓ + ⅓?
The denominators stay the same (3) and we add the numerators (1+1)
So ⅓ + ⅓ = ⅔
How do we work out ⅕ + ⅗?
The denominators stay the same (5) and we add the numerators (1+3)
So ⅕ + ⅗ = ⅘
Which of these is SMALLER?
A) 1/5 or
B) 3/10
1/5
because….. 1/5 is the same as 2/10
Therefore, 3/10 is larger than 2/10
How do we work out ⅞ + ⅝?
The denominators stay the same (8) and we add the numerators (12) However 12/8 is an IMPROPER fraction
so it need to be written as 1 & 4/8 or 1 & 1/2
What is an improper fraction?
A fraction where the numerator is larger than the denomintor
How do we work out ⅔ + ⅕?
Find the lowest common denominator (IE 3 x 5 = 15)
2/3 is equivalent to 10/15 (2x5 = 10 & 3x5 = 15)
1/5 is equivalent to 3/15 (1x3 = 3 & 5x3 = 15)
10/15 + 3/15 = 13/15
What are the two parts of a fraction called?
The numerator and the denominator
What is a fraction?
Part of a whole number expressed with a numerator (top number) over a denominator (bottom number)
How do we work out ⅓ + ⅙?
Make the denominator the same.
3 goes into 6 so 1/3 becomes 2/6
2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6
Which of these is LARGER?
A) ⅘ or
B) ⅚
5/6 because... Find the common denominator 5 x 6 = 30 4/5 is the same as 24/30 (4x6 and 5x6) 5/6 is the same as 25/30 (5x4 and 6x4) 25/30 is larger than 24/30
What do we add together when adding fractions?
The Numerator
What are ‘like’ fractions?
Fractions that have the same denominator
What are ‘unlike’ fractions?
Fractions that have different denominators
