adaptations for nutrition Flashcards
what is autotrophic nutrition?
using simple inorganic materials to produce complex organic molecules
what is a photoautotroph?
uses light energy to convert simple inorganic materials into complex organic ones
chlorophyll used to absorb sunlight energy
what is a chemoautotroph?
uses energy fromspecial methods of oxidisation, e.g. oxidisation oh hydrogen sulphide, to conevrt simple inorganic molecules into complex organic ones
what is a heterotroph?
consumes complex organic molecules which are broken down to release energy
called consumers
what is Holozoic nutrition?
organisms ingest solid/liquid food and then internally process it by ingestion, digestion, absorbtion, assimitation and then egestion
(includes nearly all animals)
herbivors, omnivore, carnivoures, and detrivoures
what are saprophytes?
carry out external digestion, feed on dead/decaying matter by excreting enzymes onto food and then absorbing the soluble products of digestion across the cell surface membrane
all fungi & some bacteria
what are parasites?
organisms that feed on or in other organisms
the parasite benefits by gaining nutrients at the expence of the host
they are highly specialised
