Adaptation
Hint: How do animals survive as a species?
A Characteristic or feature that helps a plant or animal survive in its environment. Adaptations can be physical (structural) or behavioral.
Physical Adaptations
Hint: Has to do with changes in the body or outside the body.
Structures on or in an organism’s body, like thick fur, waxy coatings, or sharp claws and thorns.
Behavioral Adaptations
Hint: What do birds do in the winter?
Actions that an organism does like migrating or hibernating.
Mimicry
Hint: Take the “ry” off the word. What do we have?
Colors and markings that make an organism look like another organism.
Hibernate
Hint: How can animals save energy?
In cold climates, organisms go into a sleep-like state of inactivity to conserve energy during winter months.
Camouflage
Specific colors or markings that help blend into surroundings and hide from predators.
Migration
Hint: Kind of like hibernation, but for birds.
When animals travel long distances, usually during specific seasons, to move to a different climate.
Nocturnal
Hint: Rats are nocturnal!
Animals that are active at night and rest during the day
