Adaptations Flashcards
What are halophiles
Organisms that live in high salt environments like salt lakes
What do adaptations do for animals
Help them survive in the conditions where they live
What are animals which are adapted for cold environments like
They are often large with a small surface area to volume ratio and thick insulating layers of fur and fat
Animals which are adapted for hot, dry environments have adaptations that
Help them keep cool and avoid water loss
Why do plants compete
For water, light and for minerals from the soil
Why do animals compete
For food, water and mates
Why is surface area:volume ratio important
Because larger the surface area:volume ratio the larger rate of energy loss, so animals in cold climates grow to larger size to help keep body heat
Why do plants need water
For photosynthesis and to keep their tissues supported
How do plants lose water former leaves
They lose water from their leaves from their stomata
Why do plants reduce the surface area of their leaves
To make sure they don’t lose water
Where do plants store water
In their stem
What are extremophiles
Microorganisms that live in extreme conditions like extreme temperature and acidity
