Adaptations Flashcards
Define adaptation
A feature of an organisms body which helps it to survive
What are structural adaptations in plants?
Physical features which allow them to compete
What are some examples of structural adaptations in plants?
Spines (cacti and roses)- stop a plant plants being eaten by grazing animals
Shallow roots- to absorb lots of water after rain
Large leaves- to maximize photosynthesis and flowers- which attract insects to pollinate them
What is meant by behavioural adaptations in plants?
Behaviours which give them an advantage
What are some examples of behavioural adaptations of plants?
Growth towards the light- maximize photosynthesis
Plant roots growing downwards d
Give example of animals that have structural adaptations
Arctic fox- white fur, camouflage against snow, avoid predators, sneak up on prey
Whales- (cold places) thick layer of blubber (fat) and low surface area to volume ratio to help them retain heat
Camels- (hot places) thin layer of fat and large surface to area ratio to help them loose heat
