self-love in TMS
self-love as beign assigned for the principle approbation, and argues that self-love is frequently a motive of virtuous action. Basis of virtuous action because of our self-love we undertake moral behavior - but too much self-love isn’t good (must be impartial spectator approved)
self-love in WN
Smith himself is against self-interest in various places in WN. For examples he criticizes selfishness of merchants and manufacturers. Important though because can ensure beneficial outcomes for oneself as well as for the whole society
benevolence
also present in WN, but not as much as self-love
bettering one’s condition in TMS
considers attainment of wealth and greatness is “grand and beautiful and noble” in both books there is a desire to better one’s condition
what is it that makes us really happy?
not wealth, but tranquility of mind - calls this a deception, but it has a positive role in the economic system because it makes the system continue to move.
