what is acute respiratory distress syndrome?
sudden and progressive form of acute respiratory failure–> affects everywhere in the lungs
what happens to the patient with ARDS?
the lung space is filled with fluid and patient will down in their own body because there is no gas exchange occurring because of all the fluid
How does ARDS occur?
typically due to systemic infection
sepsis is the most common reason and the lungs are usually often the first organ system to be affected which causes ARDS
What is the hallmark signs of acute respiratory distress syndrome?
hypoxemia despite increased FiO2, no matter what the nurse does to increase the FiO2, the PaO2 does not change
What are risk factors of getting ARDS?
- CPR
- Aspiration
- Trauma
- Sepsis
- Near drowning because of the large amount of fluid in the lungs
