Acute Periodontal Conditions Flashcards
name the 3 main acute periodontal conditions
necrotising gingivitis/ periodontitis
periodontal abscess
perio-endo lesions
what is necrotising gingivitis/ necrotising periodontitis
severe inflammatory conditions caused by pathogenic bacteria and are associated with immunosuppression
what is a periodontal abscess
active period of periodontal breakdown which occurs whilst there is marginal closure of the deep periodontal pocket occluding drainage
what is a perio-endo lesion
related endo and perio lesion that may affect a single tooth and leading to abscess formation
name key signs of necrotising periodontal disease
pain
swelling
bleeding
halitosis
ulcerated gingival tissue
name signs of periodontal abscess
pain and tenderness of gingiva
increased tooth mobility
regional lymphadenopathy
suppuration from gingiva
what are the signs of a perio-endo abscess
generalised periodontal disease with localised pain
swelling with or without suppuration on probing
deep pocketing to root apex with BOP
what is the initial management of acute periodontal conditions
assess airway - if patient is unable to swallow or push their tongue out - call 999
if airway is fine recommend optimal analgesia
what is the maintenance care for a patient with acute periodontal condition
arrange appropriate therapy with hygienist
PMPR
prescribe chemical plaque control - chlorhexidine 0.2%
how is necrotising periodontitis managed
oral hygiene instruction
appropriate debridement of tissue and allow to heal
prescription of 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash
metronidazole 400mg TID 3 days
what is a clinical feature of necrotising gingivitis
punched out papilla, bleeding gums with yellow-ish sloughing on gingivae
how should periodontal abscesses be treated
scaling and irrigating the periodontal pocket
XLA
