Acute Periodontal Conditions Flashcards
what symptoms might someone present with if they have a periodontal abscess
pain
swelling
acute mobility
bleeding
bad taste
high in occlusion
fever
pus
ulcerations
why would a tooth be high in occlusion due to an abscess
the apical pus of the abscess is pushing the tooth up making it feel higher
what do we use radiographs to assess for
bone loss
apical pathology
trauma
caries/RCT
what shape is an endo-perio lesion on a radiograph
J shaped
what is grade 1 endo-perio lesion
narrow pocket in 1 tooth surface
what is grade 2 endo-perio lesion
wide pocket in 1 tooth surface
what is grade 3 endo-perio lesion
wide pocket more than 1 tooth surface
what is included in the diagnosis of an endo-periodontal abscess
are they a perio patient already
grade of lesion
root damage or not
over what depth of pocket is advanced periodontal disease
7mm
what treatment would you give for endo-perio lesion grade 3 with no root damage
give LA and drain (incise or through pocket)
accept endo status/RCT/extract
advise chlorhexidine 0.2% 2x daily 1-2wks
consider Abx for systemic illness
what are the options for antimicrobial mouthwash
0.2% chlorhexidine
hydrogen peroxide
how do you determine which tooth is causing a sinus
GP sinus tracing
if a sinus appears after placing a post/doing RCT what kind of sinus is it
acute
if a sinus appears and the patient is not sore and it has been there a while what kind of sinus is it
chronic
what imaging is good for visualising perforations in root canals
CBCT
