What is Acute Pancreatitis?
A
Acute pancreatitis is where the pancreas becomes inflamed due to enzyme auto digestion.
80% of acute pancreatitis is mild but 20% of cases develop life threatening diseases

A
- Constant pain in the upper left quadrant or middle
- Pain radiates to back

A
- Abdominal tenderness
- Central epigastric pain that may radiate to back
- Hypotension
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Tachycardia
- Jaundice
- Fever
- Shock
- History of Alcohol or gall stones

What occurs in acute pancreatitis?
A
- Inflammation of the pancreas due to a number of causes
- Inflammation damages pancreatic acini which contain digestive enzymes
- Digestive enzymes released into surrounding tissue causing widespread damage

- Chronic Pancreatitis
- pancreatic ascites
- Pancreatitis can cause lung injury via pancreatal effusion
- Acute renal failure
- Infected pancreatic necrosis
- Fatty necrosis
