What is Acute Pancreatitis?

A

Acute pancreatitis is where the pancreas becomes inflamed due to enzyme auto digestion.
80% of acute pancreatitis is mild but 20% of cases develop life threatening diseases

A
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Central epigastric pain that may radiate to back
  • Hypotension
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Tachycardia
  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Shock
  • History of Alcohol or gall stones

What occurs in acute pancreatitis?

A
  • Inflammation of the pancreas due to a number of causes
  • Inflammation damages pancreatic acini which contain digestive enzymes
  • Digestive enzymes released into surrounding tissue causing widespread damage
