life threatening emergency due to high risk of respiratory obstruction

A
Children aged 1 - 6 years

Onset of epiglottitis
A
Over hours ( vs Croup = over days)

Respiratory features in acute epiglottitis (5)
A
- Absent cough
- Not able to drink
- Open mouth - drooling saliva
- Soft stridor
- Can’t speak/ muffled

Clinical picture of acute epiglottitis?
A
- Fever > 38.5
- Respiratory symptoms
- No preceding coryza

Mx of acute epiglottitis
A
Emergency hospital admission and tracheostomy along with IV antibiotics

A
Rifampicin
