What is the definition of acute bronchitis?
Inflammation of thebronchi, which causes a narrowing of the airways due to a combination of tissue swelling and excess mucus production
What is the aetiology of acute bronchitis?
Usually children
Usually viral infection but can be bacterial
What is the pathophysiology of acute bronchitis?
Infection irritates and inflames bronchi causing increased mucus production and productive cough
What are the clinical features of acute bronchitis?
‘Chesty’ cough with sputum production (usually clear, green or yellow) lasting around 2 weeks
Fever
What is the management of acute bronchitis?
Self limiting so no treatment
Reassure patients/parents
