Etiology - What causes AB?
95-98% caused by virus
Coronavirus, Rhinovirus, influenza/parainfluenza, RSV.

= inflamation
AB - affects which airways and starts where?
Starts in upper airways and affects the lower AWs.
Secondary AB from bacterial infections from
S. pueumoniae, H. Flu, Mycoplasma, B. Purtusis
What symptom is not associated with AB?
Fever
Symptom triad of AB
rhinitis, cough, pharyngitis
How long will cough last with AB?
1-3 weeks it will be the last thing to go away.
How do you tx?
Antitussive, NSAIDs
If cough continues beyond 3 weeks
DD/DX most common PNDS (post nasal drip syn.)
possible GERD, Asthma, Pertussis.
Which DD/Dx requires ABX Tx?
Pertussis is paroxysmal and would require ABX Tx and is reportable to
When should CXR be done?
Changes in VS in elderly.
Rales, consolidation
>75yo with cough
Fever
If COPD patient presents with unilateral supraclavicular node on palpation…
These drain the chest and if unilateral R have to think lung tumor, if L heart failure, if Bilateral infection, or COPD.
Unilateral findings anywhere in the body….
Should always go looking for unilateral Dx.
