Viral (sometimes bacterial) infection affecting trachea and major bronchi

When are there many cases of acute bronchitis?

What causes acute bronchitis?
A
Caused by influenza, rhinovirus and RSV

What is the pathophysiology of acute bronchitis?
A
- Leads to inflammation of the bronchus and excess mucus production
- Causes narrowing of the airways

What increases the risk of acute bronchitis?
A
Smoking
Damp, dusty environments

What is the S&S of acute bronchitis?
A
No clinical signs often - can get wheeze or coarse crepitations
Cough - chesty cough
- Productive and full of sputum - yellow, greenish or even clear
- Lasts roughly around 2 weeks
Fever
