Acute and Chronic Inflammation Flashcards
What is inflammation?
the reaction of vascularised living tissue to a local injury with the accumulation of fluid and cells
How can it be repaired?
Regeneration
division of parenchyma
replaced by fibroblastic or glial scar tissue
What are the 4 signs of inflammation?
redness
swelling
heat
pain
Features of acute inflammation?
mediated by innate immune system rapid onset short duration stereotyped response rapid resolution
What are the vascular changes of acute inflammation?
short vasoconstriction of arterioles
vasodilation and increased blood flow
slowing circulation
exudate fluid
What two things accompany acute inflammations?
Exudate and Pus
Features of chronic inflammation?
Long duration
presence of lymphocytes of macrophages
proliferation of blood vessels and connective tissues
not uniform
What is a granuloma?
a small area of inflammation caused by infection
occurs when lymphocytes and macrophages go to the site of injury which can split into two things
a non-caseating epithelioid granuloma and a caseating granuloma
they can form scar tissue later
