6 Golden Rules
A
- Operators must wear on the person a TLD/OSL, calibrated Direct Reading Dosimeter (DRD), and a calibrated Alarming Dosimeter (DAD) during the handling, transportation, operations or in locations of storage for any radiographic device or radioactive materials
- With the use of a handheld calibrated survey meter, survey the device at the exposure port, after every operation of the device to ensure that the source has returned to the fully shielded position within the device.
- NEVER ATTEMPT RETRIEVAL without the RSO being contacted.
- Direct and continual over the shoulder visual observation of Trainees by a CEDO
- Exposure devices and accessory equipment must be safely positioned to prevent damage during use. It is mandatory that exposure devices are lifter and lowered to or from any elevated height with an approved rope grab kit. Exposure devices must be secured (tied off) when positioned at any elevated height, and guide tubes or remote controls must not be placed in contact with a hot or sharp surface.
- All radiation incidents, near misses and equipment damage are to be reported immediately to the RSO

What does STAR mean
A
STOP Retreat to a safe position
Reassess the barrier to ensure they are adequate
THINK take Control advise the public and workforce to stay outside barriers. Monitor and ask for assistance. DO NOT attempt retrieval
ASSESS Send one person to notify the Area Manager or the RSO while other crew members monitor barriers.
REACT remain calm and wait for instructions from the RSO
