Acupuncture Flashcards
How acupuncture is viewed
Acupuncture is viewed as a complete system for health; the individual is treated holistically, not with a focus on a specific disease or health problem
Originated?
Originated in China more than 5000 years ago
What is it?
Involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points in the body (acupoints) to influence the flow of “Chi” or “Qi” through the meridians and improve health or restore health
Practiced with?
Acupuncture is most often practiced in conjunction with the philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including the 5 Element Theory and concepts of yin/yang
Often incorporates the use of Chinese herbs
Acupuncture Meridians:
12-14 channels where Chi is said to flow; most correspond to a particular set of organs
Acupoints are stimulated to balance Chi and to unblock its flow
Auricular Acupuncture
Insert several needles in the ear which may be left in for hours, days/weeks; has shown success with treating addictions and allergies
Cupping
Involves heating a “cup-like” vessel and placing it (inverted) on an acupuncture point to stimulate the flow of qi
Moxibustion
Burning a stick of the herb, moxa (Mugwort) over the acupoints to stimulate Chi
Electro acupuncture
Passing a weak electric current through the needle
Reflexology
Use finger pressure, focusing on the acupuncture points on the feet and hands
Acupressure
Uses finger pressure on the acupoints instead of needles
Laser Acupuncture
Use laser to stimulate the acupuncture points
