Civil Rights Act of 1875
Prevents discrimination (took away right to discriminate - deemed unconstitutional)
Equal Pay Act of 1963
Illegal to loose pay based on raced, religion, and nationality
Civil Rights Act of 1964
- Banned discrimination in public accommodations and federally funded programs
- Prohibited discrimination in hiring based on race/gender
- Can cut off federal funding if violated
- Allowed government to initiate lawsuits in school segregation cases
- Only applied to race originally: an opponent added gender because they thought it would kill the bill
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Reduced discrimination in voting process
- If less that half of population is registered or some test is required, federal government can step in and take over voter registration
Age Discrimination Act of 1967
Cannot consider age in job application
Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Title VIII)
Banned racial discrimination in housing
Title IX High Education Act of 1972
Prevents gender discrimination in higher education sports
Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1988
Can punish entire school, not just program
Federal Election Campaign Act of 1974
Place legal limits on campaign expenditures and contributions
Budget Reform Act of 1974
President can only impound with Congress approval
War Powers Resolution of 1973
- Notify Congress within 48 hours
- 60 days and 30 days to withdraw

Redrawing district lines by race (found unconstitutional)
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
Disability access in all public transportation and all new buildings
Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993
- 12 weeks unpaid leave for illness, etc.
- Job is protected
Welfare Reform Act of 1996
- Block grant system for welfare
- Abolished aid to families with dependent children
- Requires adults to find work within two years
- Lifetime limit of 5 years
- Prohibits aliens from receiving assistance
