Significance of 1887 Dawes act

A
  • US hoped to “civilise” Indians by teaching them to farm
  • reduced reliance on chiefs and tribes
  • by 1888, 50% of land they had in 1887 was lost
    -increase in white settlement
    -1890 end of Indian frontier
