Activity 5: Nutrient Cycling Flashcards
Natural pathways wherein essential elements of living matter are circulated
Biogeochemical cycle
Stored and a ready supply source
Reservoir
Absorbed and being used by an organism
Assimilation
Left the organisms’ body and back to the environment
Release
Large store of a nutrient at some stage in a biogeochemical cycle; Large, slow moving
Reservoir pool
Smaller but more active portion that is rapidly exchanging between organisms and their immediate environment
Cycling pool
Perfect biogeochemical cycle have a large available abiotic pool of the substance and involve existence of many negative feedbacks (e.g. nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, and water cycles)
Gaseous Cycles
Imperfect cycles do not have a large available pool of the substance as well as feedback controls (e.g. sulfur and phosphorus cycle)
Sedimentary cycles
The available pool of sedimentary cycles
Earth’s crust
