Active Volcanoes + Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What is the crater of a volcano?
A bowl shaped basin at the top of the volcanic mountain, that magma from the vent erupts from.
What is the main vent of a volcano?
The opening through the volcano that allows magma to escape. The main vent carries the magma up to the crater.
Vent - central tube which magma travels through
What is the magma chamber of a volcano?
large underground pool of magma (molten rock), located beneath the main vent
What is the secondary cone of a volcano?
Secondary cones - eruptions from other vents may build up secondary cones on the flanks
What is thrown(propelled) out of a volcano and by the force of the eruption?
Ash, steam and various gases- material thrown out by the volcano
Volcanic bombs - larger material thrown out by the force of eruption
