Active Transport Flashcards
1
Q
What is active transport?
A
It’s the process of moving molecules and ions across plasma membranes, against a concentration gradient.
2
Q
Active transport involves carrier proteins. Describe the stages of active transport.
A
- First, a large molecule attaches to a carrier protein in the membrane.
- Then, the protein changes shape.
- This releases the molecule on the opposite side of the membrane.
3
Q
Does active transport use energy (from ATP)?
A
Yes so the solute can move against its concentration gradient.
