Active Transport Flashcards
What is Active Transport?
Active Transport is the movement of molecules or ions into or out of a cell from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using ATP and carrier proteins.
What are the conditions required for active transport?
-Metabolic energy in the form of ATP is needed
-Substances are moved against a concentration gradient from a lower to a higher region of concentration
-Carrier protein molecules are involved
What is the sodium-potassium pump?
-Active transport using carrier proteins
-Sodium ions are actively removed from the cell/organelle while potassium ions are actively taken in from the surroundings
-Important for a variety of functions, including creating a nerve impulse
