How do we change active to passive voice?
- The subject is deleted
- The object of the verb becomes the subject of the passive sentence
- A form of “to be” is added and the main verb becomes a past participle
When do we use the passive voice?
- In journalism
- When the subject is indefinite or unknown
- When we want to avoid assigning blame for something
Is this an example of active or passive voice?
The fire completely destroyed the university library.
Active

In Pinelands, hundreds of trees were uprooted by the flooding.
Passive
Change this sentence to the passive voice:
At each concert, the soprano sang at least one well-known opera song.
At each concert, at least one well-known opera song was sung (by the soprano).
Change this sentence to the active voice:
A fair resolution to the issue is being sought (by the committee).
The committee is seeking a fair resolution to the issue.
Change this sentence to the passive voice:
Scientists have discovered traces of ice on the surface of Mars.
Traces of ice have been discovered on the surface of Mars (by scientists).
Change this sentence to the active voice:
The jar is filled by the falling sand.
The falling sand fills the jar.
