Action Of Lymphocytes Flashcards
Lymphocytes
Cells that produce antibodies when encountering microbes
Antibodies
Join onto specific part of microbe called antigen
Antigen
Causes microbes to rupture/group together
What does rupturing of cells do?
Causes them to die, their numbers therefore decrease overtime + the infection is reduced
Pathogen with antigens on surface + antibodies—>
Antibodies attach to multiple antigens so the pathogens clump up.
Antibodies send out a signal to the white blood cell. The white blood cell comes + engulfs the pathogens.
What are memory cells? (Specialised cells)
Ensure immune system responds quickly to infections.
Immune response steps
1) lymphocyte detects a foreign antigen
2) lymphocyte divides by mitosis
3) large numbers of plasma cell are produced. They secrete proteins called antibodies
4) antibodies bind to the antigens on pathogens + inactivate + destroy pathogens.
5) this produces memory cells which produce a rapid immune response on second exposure to the antigen.
