Act I, Scene II Flashcards
JM
Today I will be going alone to the castle to protest the corruption that riddles our government! You must come with me!
(offstage)
Cinderella!
M
That is Madame, Ella’s stepmother
JM
I shall shout to the prince! He will have no choice but to listen!
(offstage) Cinderella!
M
You are in harm’s way!
JM
I have a vision for what this kingdom could be.
(enter HR isle)
Cinderella! Help me with my parcels this instant!
Cinderella, lazy stepdaughter, help me with MY package!
Careful! Careful! No one knows the extreme torture I am subjected to.
(notices M and JM)
I’m ignoring that. Come Charlotte, Gabrielle, come daughters, come!
G
We are here, Mama!
C
We are exhausted being as beautiful as we look.
Cinderella, idle girl, come help your stepsisters with their shrewd purchases. Into the house, daughters- the real ones. (enter house)
G
Quit it, you.
JM
And four days from now I would like to take you on a date. I’m organizing a soup kitchen. We need someone to stir. And ladle.
(storm out) Gabrielle! Do not talk to that man (gesture to JM. Take ladle and shove at JM). We are teetering precariously upon upper-middle class and lower-upper class. We cannot be seen talking with a revolutionary. Into the house, at once.
(exit)
E
A book. It’s been so long since I owned something, just me.
(exit cottage)
Cinderella? Get in there and clean the kitchen.
E
I’ve just finished it.
Then prepare the dinner
E
It’s on the stove.
Then the bed must-
E
Beds are turned down and your bed clothing is all laid out.
Well
(noticing the book)
Where’d you get that book?
E
Jean-Michel just gave it to me.
So nice that people just give you gifts. Still Daddy’s little girl.
(notices the coat)
And what’s this doing here?
E
That’s my father’s coat.
It’s rags.
E
It’s all I have to remember him by.
(rips coat) It’s rags now. Clean the porch with these rags.
(throw coat on ground and exit)
