Act 5 Sc 2 Flashcards
“ Give me thy hand come on” Edgar line 7 (to gloucester) (5,2)
(only relevant considering gloucesters next lines)
“No further, sir; a man may rot even here” Gloucester line 8 (5,2)
LAST LINE IN QUARTO VERSION - tragic as it is as if gloucester has given up on living once again, he does not want to run and is happy to sit by that tree and die.
“And that’s true too” Gloucester line 12 (5,2)
LAST LINE IN FOLIO VERSION this line does not exist in the quarto
after Edgar tells Gloucester that he should not let himself sit and rot because there is a time when everyone should die and this is not his time to go, and this is his response.
Difference in versions: Quarto vs Folio
~Line 12 (and that’s true too) only exists in the folio version of king lear, making that his last line in the play, a line of hope and a readiness to move on and not give up on life - a willingness to keep going
~But in the Quarto version of king lear, line 12 does not exist, meaning that line 8 is gloucesters last line in the play, meaning that he gives up hope and edgars attempt to make him want to live (the falling off cliff being saved by god’s plan) has failed.
