Act 5 Flashcards
How is Romeo’s dream interesting/ ironic?
Romeo dreamt that Juliet found him dead, kissed him, and he awoke as an emperor. His dream is ironic because Juliet is really the one he found “dead”, and it’s interesting because it almost exactly parallels what’s about to happen.
What does Romeo ask Balthasar? Why?
Romeo asks Balthasar if he has any letters from Friar Laurence and how Juliet is.
What does Balthasar say he saw in Verona?
Balthasar tells Romeo he saw Julie’s body being laid in the cemetery.
Romeo responds by saying “Is it e’en [even] so? Then I defy you, stars.” What does this mean? What does Romeo decide to do next? (Be specific.)
Romeo plans to defy fate and join Juliet in death. He decides to buy poison, go to the Capulet tomb, and kill himself.
Why is Friar John unable to deliver Friar Laurence’s letter to Romeo?
Friar John was quarantined in Mantua because the health officers of Mantua believed he was in contact with the plague.
Who does Friar Laurence blame? (Hint: He says “Unhappy fortune!”)
Like Romeo, Friar Laurence blames fate instead of taking accountability for this mistake or blaming himself for not being more specific.
Friar Laurence rushes to Juliet’s tomb because she will be waking up within the hour; in reality, why should he rush even more?
Friar Laurence should rush to Juliet’s tomb even more bc/ Romeo already left to meet her and then kill himself. The friar has to beat Romeo there to stop him.
What oxymoron (two words that are opposites) is used to describe Juliet?
“Poor living corpse, closed in a dead man’s tomb!”
Juliet is alive, but she looks dead
When Romeo goes to Juliet’s tomb, who does he find mourning her there? How does he kill himself?
Romeo is confronted by Paris when he arrives at Juliet’s tomb bc/ Paris suspects Romeo is there to tamper w/ the bodies.
Paris provokes Romeo to fight. Romeo kills Paris, blames fate again for his death (“One writ with me in sour misfortune’s book!”).
Romeo speaks to Juliet, noticing her beauty and telling fate one last time that he’s defying it. He drinks the apothecary’s poison and dies.
When Juliet discovers Romeo, she notices “thy lips are warm” and cries. What does this mean?
This means that Romeo just died. Juliet realizes that their timing was just off. If he would’ve came later or she would have woken up sooner, they would still be alive.
What is one possible reason that Friar Laurence leaves the tomb, when he says “I dare no longer stay”?
Friar is afraid he’ll get in trouble with the Prince. He looks bad, guilty bc/ Paris and Romeo are dead, and Juliet has stab wounds even though she was supposedly dead.
How does Juliet try to kill herself? How does she actually do so?
Juliet notices Romeo is holding a cup, and tries to kiss his lips to get some of the leftover poison. She ends up stabbing herself with Romeo’s dagger.
How will the Capulets and Montagues honor the loss of Romeo and Juliet (besides making peace with one another)?
Montague says he will raise Juliet’s statue of pure gold in Verona, and Capulet agrees to do the same for Romeo.
