Act 3 Summary Flashcards
At the beginning of Act 3, what is revealed?
It is revealed that Eric is the father of the child (irony) - Eric confesses to this. He met Eva (Daisy) at the Palace bar, where during the night they were together, she ended up pregnant.
What does Eric do when he found out Eva was pregnant?
He stole money from his father’s office to support Eva and his unborn child (he stole £50, which was a lot back then). Eva refused to take the money as it was clear it had been stolen. (she contrasts the depiction of the lower class being thieving and immoral.)
After everyone has been interrogated, what does the inspector do?
He delivers a final speech about responsibility, social inequality and compassion to the Birlings. This speech is a warning because if they don’t change, there will be servere consequences to their actions
After the Inspetors speech, who returns and with what news?
Gerald returns after taking a stroll and reveals the information he had found upon his leave - there was no Inspector Goole at the police force he claimed to be from.
What do the characters do after Gerald says there is no Inspector Goole?
Mr Birling, Mrs Birling and Gerald are triumphantly celebrating this fact, and that they will no longer have to hide this “public scandal”
What do Sheila and Eric do after Gerald returns with the news?
Sheila and Eric are appalled at Mr Birling, Mrs Birling and Geralds attitude towards the suicide, as they believe that the 3 of them are allowing themselves to forget their immoral actions against Eva
What happens after Mr+Mrs Birling and Gerald celebrate and Sheila and Eric are appalled by them?
they receive a phone call. Mr Birling picks up. It is a call from the local police station to inform him that a young girl has died and is on her way to the infirmary. Another Inspector will be visiting them…
