Act 2 Sc 3 Flashcards
What theme dominates this scene?
Reputation- two characters lose control in the festivities and diminish their reputations. (Cassio is involved in a drunken brawl and Othello loses his temper).
Conversely, how does Iago enhance his reputation?
As an honest, conscientious soldier and as a helpful friend. He has masterful self-control and manages to manipulate and control others, for example Roderigo’s actions and Cassio’s drinking.
How do the two depictions of Desdemona foreshadow later events?
Iago:’full of game’ Cassio:’fresh and delicate’ ‘perfection’
This foreshadows the future decision Othello will have to make: whether his wife is a whore or a respectful, faithful wife.
To iago, what is a weakness?
Love
What does Othello’s loss of temper signal?
That he is no longer master of himself- he is now ruled by passionate, not judgment.
Quote showing Iago’s confidence in manipulating Othello’s thoughts
“I’ll pour his pestilence into his ear”
“I’ll pour his pestilence into his ear”- Analysed.
Imagery of poison which fits his role as a villain. It is a definite statement which shows Iago has confidence in his power of manipulation. The Audience has no reason to doubt this.
The structure of this sentence makes it clear that Othello is to be the recipient and Iago is in control.
Repeated ‘P’ and ‘S’ sounds adds emphasis and intensity, tightening the tension for the audience.
